WHL: Would be Kings

McKeen's correspondent Randy Gorman looks at several prospects from the Brandon Wheat Kings that are eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Forwards Brayden Schenn and Scott Glennie headline the list of Wheat Kings' prospects as they currently rank No. 8 and No. 15 respectively on McKeen's Spring Rankings.
Brayden Schenn (2009), C, Brandon

Slick, playmaking center has all the tools to play in the NHL .. above-average skater with quick acceleration, Schenn becomes dangerous on the rush and has very good hockey sense with the ability to find the open man .. he has a quick release on his shot with decent velocity and accuracy .. also very good at one-timers .. Schenn led Brandon in scoring with 32 goals and 56 assists for 88 points in 70 games .. will likely follow the same path as his brother (Luke Schenn) by being a top-10 draft pick.
Scott Glennie (2009), C, Brandon
Not as celebrated as his teammate Schenn, but Glennie is a hard-working gritty speedster that prides himself at looking after both ends of the ice .. is very skilled, and protects the puck well on the cycle along the wall .. he will go to those areas in front of the net looking for tip-ins and rebounds and has a great touch around the net. Glennie amassed 70 points in just 55 games including 28 goals and a plus-22 rating
Brodie Melnychuk (2009), D, Brandon
Big 6-foot-3 193-pound mobile d-man had 3 goals and 16 points in 71 games for the this season .. Brodie uses his size to his advantage and punishes opposing forwards with hard bodychecks .. he likes a physical game and brings it every night .. skates very well for his size .. his defensive zone outlet passes are generally tape to tape .. he is also very good at blocking shots and clearing the front of the net.
Jesse Hall (2009), C, Brandon
Hall was limited to just 29 games due to injuries and being a healthy scratch on occasion .. at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he's still growing and hasn't fully developed in the upper body .. demonstrates hustle and desire, he works hard in his role as a fourth-line checker .. an average skater, nothing fancy, but has a nice skating stride .. works hard on the forecheck and creates space and scoring opportunities for his linemates.
Paul Ciarelli (2009), C, Brandon
Ciarelli had 5 goals and 7 points through 52 games this season .. has good size (6-0, 186), strength, and plays a physical, but needs to work harder on the defensive part of the game .. smart with the puck , but needs to make decisions faster and get better body position on defenders .. has a great work ethic and battles hard.
Mark Schneider (2009), D, Brandon
Scheider had a good season as a 17-year old defenseman .. he is a prototypical stay-at-home defenseman that is very quick and has a good gap control .. has good judgment and manages his space well when challenging opponents, as he makes it hard for them to beat him wide along the boards by having good body position .. he was limited to just 38 games for the season (32 with Brandon) after coming over in a trade with Kamloops .. had 3 goals and 1 assist to go along with a plus-5 rating .. he must work on his shot from the point and jump into the rush more often to add to the offense .. displays good grit and has decent hockey sense.
Darren Bestland (2009), D, Brandon
Bestland had a steady learning season getting some playing time with veterans Colby Robak and Keith Aulie .. is not blessed with size (5-10, 175) but he plays hard and opposing players don't like playing against him .. will do the little things that it takes to win with his competitiveness and his willingness to get involved in the play .. displays good passing skills and likes to join the rush .. defensively, he blocks shots and plays physical .. finished the season with 6 goals, 10 assists and a plus-6 rating in 63 games.
Stephane Robidoux (2009), D, Brandon
Robidoux was limited to just 35 games due to injuries and being a healthy scratch on occasion .. must learn to be more relaxed at this level and not panic with the puck .. good skater that works hard and gets the puck to his forwards quick and concise when he has time .. must improve his gap control and react quicker in his own end, but that should come with more playing time .. has a very hard shot but must harness better control .. puck protection is good along the boards and he fights fiercely to keep it.
James Priestner (2009), G, Brandon
Priestner was primarily the backup this season to Andrew Hayes but he did appear in 29 games coming over in a trade with Kamloops .. in 29 games James spotted a record of 17-7-1-1, which is decent for a 17-year old backup .. he needs to work on his lateral movement to prevent wrap-around goals .. needs to handle the puck better around his net .. he challenges shooters and faces them square on .. displays good rebound control and he sees the puck well through traffic.
