USA Select 17: The McLaughlin Group

We end our look at Team Green's forwards, this time we're featuring William McLaughlin of Pennsylvania. McLaughlin didn't score a score, but he did a lot of other things well at the Select 17 Festival in St. Cloud, Minnesota. We also have notes on Travis Stevens of California, Kyle Stoumbaugh of Washington and Stephen Sperry of Michigan.

The undersized forward produced 41 points (25-16-41) in 38 games last season for Wyoming Seminary Prep .. fearless on the forecheck .. gets a terrific burst from his first few strides and definitely can turn the corner on a defender .. has the overall speed to rarely get caught up the ice on a transition .. drives hard through the check and keeps his feet moving on contact .. a real energy player .. proved that he could take a solid hit and bounce right back up .. wasn't overly impressed with the imagination on the powerplay .. strong on the puck .. must work on getting making his shots more dangerous .. wore #17 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 0-3-3-4).
Travis Stevens (2006), F
Another forward on Team Green in need of a growth spurt .. looked effective centering a line of Locke Jillson and Kyle Stoumbaugh .. ties up his man off the draw .. gets a good burst from his first few steps and is very mobile with or without the puck .. will throw his body in front of a point shot .. not a devastating hitter, yet will take the body and usually can be counted on to finish his checks .. wore #18 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 1-1-2-4).
Kyle Stoumbaugh (2006), F
Played last season with the Puget Sound Tomahawks Jr. B where he recorded 43 points (25-18-43) in 42 games .. not be a terrible skater, he seems to lack the strength to get a good jump from his first few strides .. will take the body when he has the opportunity .. displayed very good hand-eye coordination .. has a nice touch around the net as his numbers at the Festival will attest to .. wore #19 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 3-1-4-2).
Steve Sperry (2007), F
Promising youngster from the NTDP only racked up 8 points (3-5-8) in 53 games last season, but he was younger than most players on his team .. has better than average vision .. very good hand-eye coordination .. blessed with mobility and acceleration .. strong on his skates and keeps his feet moving on contact .. conscientious defensively and will stick with his man .. effective in the faceoff circle when called upon .. doesn't mind chipping the puck deep in to the offensive zone to try and setup a forecheck .. closes the gaps and cuts down time on the puckcarrier .. has the overall speed and strength to beat a defender wide and then cut back in and drive to the net .. wore #20 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 1-2-3-2).
