USA Select 17: Jewells Intuition

In our continuing review at Team Royal's forwards we highlight Trevor Jewell of Florida who is eligible for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. We also have notes on Mike Griffin of Massachusetts, Nicodemus Bownds of Texas and Josh Bergren of Minnesota.

Mike Griffin (2006), F

Scored 14 times and added 10 helpers for 24 points with Thayer Academy last season .. lanky forward who is likely still filling out his 6'3" frame, but only 165lbs. .. a bit of a slushy skater which limits his chances to recover and get back in to the play .. displayed some finish around the net as well as the ability to get open .. wore #12 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 3-1-4-0).

Nicodemus Bownds (2006), F

Produced 23 points (9-14-23) in 66 games with the Dallas Stars last year .. good sized (6'0"-190lbs.) forward .. needs to focus more as was having trouble finding the touch around the net, be it mishandling the puck, passing it in to a teammate's feet or simply missing the net on a shot .. skates well, although no one area stands out .. wore #14 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 0-0-0-0).

Josh Bergren (2006), F

Racked up 62 points (21-41-62) in 28 games last season for Centennial High School .. sometimes tries to force a play where none exists .. can be a tenacious checker that closes the gaps and bottles up an opponent in their end for extended periods of time .. displays nice hand-eye coordination with the ability to recover a pass that went in to his skates by kicking it up to his stick .. has a goal scorer's poise as he proved on a breakaway when he froze the goal and popped it by the glove hand .. wore #15 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 2-1-3-22).

Trevor Jewell (2006), F

Chipped in with 16 points (6-10-16) in 71 games for Florida Jr. Everblades last campaign .. boasts a fairly heavy wrist shot .. needs to become more defensively aware as he can be caught being a spectator on occasion .. blessed with nice size at 6'2" and 190 pounds .. played on defense for a game due to injuries and didn't look at all out of place .. wore #16 .. USA Select 17 totals (6, 1-0-1-2).
