Tim Hortons Tournament: McAllister, Moon Shine

In the second instalment of our Tim Horton's AAA report, David Burstyn showcases the rest of the tournament standouts including the eye-catching Joel McAllister of the Greater-Kingston Predators, Nathan Moon of the Quinte Red Devils and Jared Staal of the Thunder Bay Kings, though the fourth Staal brother stood out for different reasons.
Tye McGinn (F), Guelph Jr Storm

Younger brother of James of the Ottawa 67's .. stickhandles well in traffic .. boasts decent acceleration but struggled with his cuts as he spilled to the ice on one play which resulted in a goal .. has good vision and is able to execute excellent passes .. competes hard and plays a feisty game.
Stephen Johnston (F), Guelph Jr Storm
Easily the best player for the Storm in the tournament .. silky-smooth skater who displays above-average speed .. makes smart decisions with the puck that usually lead to offensive chances .. tended to plays on the perimeter, relying heavily on his shot as he shies away from driving to the net .. needs to work on his positioning in the neutral zone as he was caught a few times without a player to cover .. offers a nice combination of skill and skating strength .. may go in top three rounds of the OHL draft, though playing on a weak team may affect his stock.
Matt Samis (G), Guelph Jr Storm
Certainly covers a lot of the net at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds already.. virtually impossible to beat down low as his legs cover the bottom of the crease .. quite and agile for his size and also moves very well side to side .. displayed a superquick glove hand and average stickhandling abilities .. his size is such an attractive feature that he may warrant consideration in the top three rounds of the draft given he puts together a decent season.
Thomas Nesbitt (F), Ottawa Valley Titans
Prototypical power forward in the making .. lacks the size now but will certainly fill out his frame over the upcoming seasons .. powers to the net with authority and is a crafty stickhandler .. not the greatest skater but he protects the puck well while his stocky frame allows him to bull over the opposition .. needs to work on the accuracy of his shots though .. better in close as he can utilize his soft, quick hands .. a leader on a strong team and a likely second-round pick in the next OHL Priority Selection.
Andrew Clouthier (F), Ottawa Valley Titans
An effective down-low player who cycles the puck with fair success .. boasts a big frame and uses his strength to create scoring chances .. works well with teammate Zachary Hervato, constantly making nice tape-to-tape centering feeds .. steals pucks by outmuscling players along the boards .. demonstrates the potential to get drafted and play for an OHL team as soon as next season.
Matt MacDougall (D), Ottawa Valley Titans
Big, reliable defender who plays a simple game .. does not get caught out of position due to his outstanding mobility .. good wheels, wins the lose-puck battles .. shifts well side-to-side and hits when he can .. capable of making a good first pass .. looked a bit tired towards the end of the game but logged huge minutes throughout the contest .. shows definite OHL star ability, perhaps not as an offensive-minded defender but more as a reliable, Nathan McIver type.
Honourable mention goes to Zachary Hervato who played very well on the Titans top line. He has strong one-on-one skills and always angles himself into a position to score. Size may be a deterrent but his skill level and ability to create offence can't be overlooked.
Joel McAllister (F), Greater-Kingston Predators
Literally carried this team on his back as far as the offensive load was concerned .. incredible speed and silky smooth on his skates .. able to suck defenders out of position and beat them to the outside .. makes quick decisions in both the offensive and defensive zone .. always stays with plays, swatting at pucks while on his back, terrific concentration .. fast to pester defenders as a forechecker .. wants the puck and is determined in his efforts .. scored highlight goals throughout the tournament .. was a force every time he touched the ice .. even when his team was losing 6-0 in the semi-finals, he still played with such intensity .. left a big impression on everyone here and will be an early pick in the OHL draft.
Chris VanLaren (D), Greater-Kingston Predators
Wears the "A" .. a slick and extremely smooth skater .. soft on his feet and boasts tremendous mobility .. relied upon to carry the puck up the ice and generate offence .. has good offensive instincts and can read the play well .. doesn't rely on his physical ability to contain forwards but is a strong skater and gets good positioning in the defensive zone .. a player of his talent level may slip into the top rounds and be playing in the OHL as early as next season.
Jared Staal (F), Thunder Bay Kings
Final instalment of the prodigious Staal family .. came across at this tournament as a lazy hockey player who doesn't pick up his checks and likes to cherry-pick constantly .. not an overly fluent skater, long stride but not much speed yet .. anticipates and reads plays decently enough in the offensive zone .. can make things happen on the power play however .. displays many lazy habits that he will need to improve before draft time.
Mitchell Forbes (F), Thunder Bay Kings
Showed many offensive tools and abilities at this event .. well-rounded attacker - a playmaker but equally a goalscorer as well .. charges plays and makes things happen by initiating physical contact .. a strong, fluid skater .. needs to work on his shooting game however as his release isn't yet an asset.
Justin Longley (D), Thunder Bay Kings
Small defender who should fill out .. wears the captaincy and plays a smart solid game .. boasts excellent wheels and can really fly with the puck on his stick .. quarterbacks an effective powerplay and is always a threat with the puck .. displays a decent shot that he can get away quickly .. protects the puck on all occasions .. could be a high draft pick if he fills out, as he possesses all the tools to succeed at the next level.
Ryan Faragher (G), Thunder Bay Kings
Made lots of save throughout the tournament and was key in the quarterfinal win over the Quinte Red Devils .. uses an active stick to pokecheck .. slides well across his crease and his legs cover the bottom portion of the net exceptionally well .. stands up to shooters and readily challenges .. his five-hole looks rather exposed at times, a flaw he will need to work on.
There are many considerable mentions on this deep Thunder Bay team that will get an automatic entry into the OHL Cup. Players to watch include Jordan Davis, a slick, extremely agile skater and capable goalscorer. Another is Kale Kerbashian who combines good speed with solid hockey smarts. Darren Cizmar works hard and gets involved along the boards. He displayed a decent shot and is not afraid to attack the net looking to bang in rebounds.
Nathan Moon (F), Quinte Red Devils
Played last year as a 15-year-old in Tier II .. shows tremendous patience with the puck .. crafty playmaker always looking to make the best possible play .. willing to take abuse in front to score .. dangerous with room as he is ever so slick with the puck .. stickhandles through defenders in traffic with ease .. relies heavily on his offensive instincts as his play away from the puck needs work .. tends to give up on plays too easily and needs to show more determination .. must also learn to maintain focus as he takes senseless penalties at times .. showed that he can dominate and stand out at this level, so expect him to be a first-round pick this season.
Luke Haegele (F), Quinte Red Devils
A towering forward who has yet to scratch the surface of his potential .. strong on his skates .. a long stride enables him to cover a lot of the ice surface .. his skating mechanics are a little awkward as his coordination has yet to catch up to his body .. protects the puck well and drives to the net .. demonstrates offensive capabilities which should see him convert on more of his chances as the season progresses .. looks like this year's Joe Gaynor, who was an OHL second-rounder last year.
Doug Reid (F), Barrie Colts
Constantly throwing his body around and made many hits to ignite his team and linemates .. tall and physically imposing .. moves his feet well and boasts a nice stride .. goes to the net with authority and will often pay the price to score.
Shane Carter (F), Barrie Colts
Possesses a tremendous wristshot with a super fast release .. a quick, shifty player who darts in and out of the offensive zone .. makes nice turns as his quick feet allow him to capitalize on loose pucks .. also very good at the transition game as he makes the adjustments from offense to defense very well.
Brian Doust (F), Barrie Colts
A small forward who is able to sneak around defenders .. wins the loose puck battles .. extremely agile and displays excellent hand-eye coordination .. a penalty-killing specialist who is such a quick skater he fore checks diligently cutting down passing lanes and be aggressive on the puck carrier .. gets his shots off in a hurry in the slot.
The Barrie Colts lost in the final to the London Jr. Knights but played extremely well as a team. They have players who buy into the team concept and do not play outside their limitations. Justin Dicks and captain Jordan Stapleton show good offensive instincts coupled with a sound defensive approach to the game and will certainly be noticed come OHL draft time.
The Nepean Raiders were the only team to beat the champion London Jr. Knights largely due to the goaltending of Adam Boland. He made numerous enormous saves throughout the tournament, challenging shooters aggressively and displaying strong concentration especially in traffic. Robert Ventura and Scott Domenico are two smaller forwards with tremendous skill sets. They play a similar game as both are strong skaters and offense-minded in that they like to look for the breakout pass. Gamebreakers with solid one-on-one skills and, when they get a full head of steam, the type of elusiveness that forces defenders to frequently haul them down.
