The Wayne Gretzky "99" Award was first presented in 1999 in recognition of the league's most famous graduate, who played for the Peterborough Petes and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the late 1970's.
Justin Papineau of the Belleville Bulls was the first winner, followed by Brian Finley of the Barrie Colts in 2000, Seamus Kotyk of the Ottawa 67's in 2001 and Brad Boyes of the Erie Otters last year.
