Pirjeta The Unheralded

The versatile Lasse Pirjeta, who can play all three forward positions, is making
a strong early case to start the year on a line with Ray Whitney and Espen Knutsen.

Other less-heralded prospects pushing for NHL spots include Bobby Allen (Edm),
Joe Corvo (LA), Adam Hall (Nsh) and Matt Murley (Pit). Here is what we had to
say about each in our 2002-03 McKeen's Yearbook.
Lasse
Pirjeta, CBJ, W-C
The Jackets went fishing for some immediate help in seven-year Finnish League
veteran, who led Karpat in scoring and also played in the World Championships
(7-0-0-0) .. A big, skilled forward with good hands, Pirjeta moves well and
is a slick puckhandler who can be effective along the boards, although he has
long been criticized for his inconsistent work habits and laissez-faire physical
attitude .. Giving him a one-way deal was risky, especially if his consistency
and motivational levels stay the same.
Bobby
Allen, Edm, D
Acquired from the Bruins at the deadline, former BC All-American was routinely
praised in Providence for his steady defensive work and made an even bigger
impression in his Bulldogs' debut (10-1-6-7, plus-6) .. A poised, mobile rearguard
with good size, Allen isn't a flashy puckhandler or a punishing hitter, but
is very strong positionally and plays a simple and efficient game .. Plays a
thinking man's game similar to Eric Weinrich.
Joe
Corvo, LA, D
Former Western Michigan star blossomed in his third AHL term, finishing seventh
among AHL blueline scorers and winning Team MVP honours .. A rugged, hard-shooting
rearguard with good size, strength and skills, Corvo brings a competitive edge
every night, and is very effective when he plays within his limitations and
minimizes mistakes, albeit he does lack some defensive-zone agility .. Dedicated
team player has earned an NHL audition.
Adam
Hall, Nsh, RW
Spartans' captain led MSU in goals for the second time in his four-year career
and made a strong first impression during his NHL debut in the season finale
.. An intense, physical winger with good playmaking skills and a quick, powerful
shot, Hall is smart positionally and knows how to use his excellent size and
strength along the boards, but isn't the most elegant skater and lacks some
first-step quickness .. Will be given every chance to crack the Preds.
Matt
Murley, Pit, LW
RPI co-captain enjoyed a fine senior finale, notching 24 goals to lead the ECAC
for a second straight year and also earning All-American second-team honours
.. A smart, versatile sharpshooter with soft hands and deceptive speed, Murley
boasts excellent puck-control skills and has made huge gains defensively over
his four-year career, but must keep upgrading his physical play and upper-body
strength .. An underrated prospect who might surprise.
