OHL Players of the Month - McDavid, Vande Sompel, DeBrincat Appleby

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for October, 2014, including Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters, defenceman Mitchell Vande Sompel of the Oshawa Generals, rookie Alex DeBrincat of the Otters, and goaltender Ken Appleby of the Generals.

For the second year in a row Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters is the OHL's Player of the Month for October this time leading the league with 30 points in 10 games including 10 goals and 20 assists along with a plus-minus rating of plus-22. McDavid recorded points in all 10 games played last month with nine multi-point performances collecting four points on five different occasions. He helped lead the Otters to a 9-0-0-1 record in October scoring three game-winning goals and was recognized as a star of the game in seven different contests highlighted by five first star honours.
McDavid, a 17-year-old from Newmarket, ON, is playing in his third OHL season. The former OHL Rookie of the Year and reigning Most Sportsmanlike and Scholastic Player of the Year is a top prospect eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft. He currently leads the OHL in scoring with 42 points in 15 games and will compete in the SUBWAY Super Series with Team OHL on November 13 in Peterborough.
OHL Defenceman of the Month - Mitchell Vande Sompel (Oshawa Generals):
Mitchell Vande Sompel of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL's Defenceman of the Month after leading all blueliners in scoring with 15 points in 11 games recording two goals and 13 assists along with a plus-minus rating of plus-2. He recorded points in eight of his 11 games played with three multi-point games helping the Generals to a 9-2-0-0 record in the OHL's East Division. The highlight of his month was on October 24 producing a career-high five-point game with a goal and four assists as first star of an 8-5 victory over the Saginaw Spirit.
Vande Sompel, a 17-year-old from London, ON, is playing in his second career OHL season. Chosen in the first round, 14th overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, Vande Sompel is one point shy of his rookie point total and currently tied for the OHL's scoring lead among defencemen with 19 points in 16 games. The 2015 NHL Draft prospect will compete for Team OHL in the 2014 SUBWAY Super Series November 13 in Peterborough and November 17 in Kingston.
OHL Rookie of the Month - Alex DeBrincat (Erie Otters):
The OHL's Rookie of the Month for October is Erie Otters' forward Alex DeBrincat who scored 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 10 games played with a plus-minus rating of plus-21. DeBrincat recorded points in all 10 games he played including seven multi-point performances. He began the month with a career-high four-point game scoring twice with two assists as second star of a 7-3 win over the Sarnia Sting. He is currently on a 13-game scoring streak which is one game behind teammate Connor McDavid for the longest in the OHL this season at 14 games.
DeBrincat, a 16-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, is tied for fourth overall in league scoring with 28 points in 15 games played. The 1997-born forward attended Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Illinois, last season scoring 54 goals and 111 points in 50 games before committing to the Otters in April. He is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.
Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month - Ken Appleby (Oshawa Generals):
The Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month is Ken Appleby of the Oshawa Generals who backstopped his club to first place in the East Division last month posting an 8-1-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .922 making 213 saves in October. Appleby, who claimed this award last February, also earned two shutout victories including October 3 with 31 saves as first star of a 3-0 win over the Ottawa 67's, then made 19 saves as third star of a 6-0 win over the Owen Sound Attack on October 18.
Appleby, a 19-year-old from North Bay, ON, is playing in his third full OHL season with the Generals. He leads all OHL goaltenders with 12 wins and has the lowest goals-against-average with a mark of 1.91 and is tied for first with a .926 save percentage and three shutouts. He will represent Team OHL in the 2014 SUBWAY Super Series November 13 in Peterborough.
