OHL Cup: Timely Terry

Markham Islanders center Chris Terry scored timely goals in the OHL Cup and could well be a steal for the team that takes him in the OHL draft. David Burstyn's look at players from that tournament continues with solid Brantford 99ers defender Jake Muzzin, hard working Reps captain Scott Timmons and more.
Daniel Lombardi (2007), LW, Mississauga Senators
Advertisement
A very fluid skater with a nice stride that generates modest speed once he gets going .. a deft stick handler in close and has the ability to suck a defenceman in with a quick move and then blow by him .. plays with an edge, crashes the net and causes disturbances .. tough to contain when his feet are moving .. sometimes looks for too much offence at the expense of defensive awareness .. tends to lose composure at times; plays aggressive but must be mindful of taking bad penalties.
Projection: Lombardi has a nice combination of skill and grit. While he is only 5'9, he is still growing and plays much bigger than he is. He played a few games in Provincial Jr.A so he can keep up with the pace of higher competition. Realistically will be drafted in the mid-second round, but late in the first round is not out of the question. (3gp, 2-1-3 pim 2)
Chris Terry, (2007), C, Markham Islanders
An offensive-minded player with great finishing skills .. strong skater on the outside and can control the play in the offensive zone with an ability to skate freely around defenders .. angles himself in scoring positions and charges the net when possible .. displays good patience and knows what do to with the puck .. great release with an accurate wrist shot .. does many things right in the neutral zone; intercepting passes, closing passing lanes and aggressive forecheck, which leads to many breakaways .. plays physical but he must be mindful not to look for a big hit that takes him out of the play .. overall strength and conditioning is a must to take it to next level.
Projection: Terry is a game breaker. Throughout the tournament he scored timely goals and was counted on in many different situations. He can do a lot of things well, however his size is a concern. Terry will probably be chosen late second round but if he can add muscle and weight in the off season he could be a steal at that spot. (5gp, 5-4-9 pim 2)
Kevin Mole (2007), D, Mississauga Senators
A silky smooth skater, cuts the ice very well and has a tight turning radius .. committed to sound defensive play and can also make a nice first pass out of the zone .. very adept at reading plays and putting himself in good position .. used on PK and while not overly physical, he ties up his man in front with solid positioning.
Projection: Mole captained the Senators and was relied upon heavily. He controlled the tempo of the game rather nicely and ate up a lot of minutes. Can he take his game to the next level? Teams will probably be willing to gamble a third round pick to find that out. (3gp, 0-1-1 pim 0)
Jake Muzzin (2007), D, Brantford 99ers
A massive defender who takes care of his defensive responsibilities .. constantly makes smart decisions .. not flashy .. plays a safe game .. timely dump-ins for line changes .. not over-committing in the offensive zone .. surprisingly agile for a player of his size, can roll off players and make quick passes .. has good one-on-one skills and with hulking size is capable of rubbing out the man .. not a quick skater by any stretch and feels slightly uncomfortable manning the rush .. can be flustered by strong, quick aggressive forecheckers.
Projection: Muzzin's size already gives him an edge over his peers. He makes smart plays and teams are always looking to add a player of his calibre to their roster. Muzzin can and will work his way up in defensive pairings by the team that selects him in the mid second round. (3gp, 0-1-1 pim 4)
Adam Zamec (2008), LW, London Jr. Knights
A player with strong offensive instincts and awareness .. good positioning in offensive zone makes him a constant threat and one that commands attention from defencemen .. leads the rush on plays confidently .. plays 2-on-1 effectively; if defence rushes him he will burn them by getting a quick shot off or making an accurate pass .. slick skater, has tremendous balance .. has a tendency to be to fancy at times with errant passes creating quick turnarounds for opposing team.
Projection: Zamec was a complete spark plug for his team throughout the whole tournament. The opposition knew when he was on the ice at all times. Generously listed at 6'0 it will be interesting to see if Zamec's game will develop enough to be successful at the next level. He did benefit from playing on a good team with exceptional linemates. A solid second round pick, but where he specifically goes depends on individual team needs. (5gp, 3-4-7 pim 2)
Pat Leonard (2007), LW, Plymouth Compuware
A nice combination of size and skill .. a smart hockey player who can play all three zones well .. not overly fast but is positionally sound which keeps him in plays .. battles for space in front of the net and bangs away at loose pucks .. uses his large frame to protect puck, dish out hits and play a strong physical game with a nasty edge .. good puck distribution skills .. not much of a finisher .. seems to have little offensive upside.
Projection: Leonard will attract the attention of scouts because of his huge frame and strong all-around game. It is probable that Leonard will not be drafted until the fourth or fifth round, but with a commitment to off-season training he could become an effective role player in the future. (3gp, 0-3-3 pim 0)
Scott Timmons (2007), C, Hamilton Reps
Captain of the team and played in all situations .. big forward with soft hands and an ability to score, as witnessed on a sweet breakaway goal .. good technique on face-offs and successful on draws .. effective stick-handler .. plays with a larger stick and usually breaks up plays or creates offensive chances with a timely poke check .. has a hard shot and quick release.
Projection: Timmons got better with every game in the tournament. He has many tools that OHL teams covet. His strong work ethic and play with and without the puck should see him drafted late second round or early third. (3gp, 2-2-4 pim 0)
Corey Tropp (2007), RW, Detroit Belle Tire
Gets down low to generate speed in his stride .. solid work ethic on every part of the ice .. a work horse that mucks it up in the corners or gets teammates inspired by a big hit .. more of a set-up man but can shot off quickly too .. never takes a shift off.
Projection: Tropp would have had a better tournament if he had better linemates. He can create plays but lacks the finishing skills to put the points up. He would be best utilized as a mucker or a set-up man to a scorer. Tropp may get drafted this year but his game is better suited for Jr.B. (3gp, 1-2-3 pim 2)
Josh Suhanji (2007), D, London Jr. Knights
A defenseman with solid skating skills in both lateral and reverse .. plays the man rather than the puck .. not overly physical but can deliver checks .. tends to stay back often and cover for his rushing defensive partner.. used on PK .. limited PP time due to his weak, ineffective shot.
Projection: Suhanji is your typical defensive defenseman. He is a poorer version of Toronto Marlboro Wilson Ngai. He is sure to be picked in the top three rounds as many coaches could adapt his style of play to complement their own. (5gp, 0-2-2 pim 4)
Jason McDonough (2007), LW, Mississauga Senators
A quick skater with strong foot speed .. speed allows him to drive to net before defenders can tie him up .. good hands in close and tapped in a goal off a rebound in traffic .. primarily used on PK due to his fast skating and ability to aggressively forecheck players .. has keen offensive instincts .. able to spot his teammates with good distribution passes.
Projection: McDonough is a work in progress and he is not particularly strong in any one area. He should be drafted in the fifth or sixth round but it is unlikely he will crack an OHL team roster next year. (3gp, 1-1-2 pim 0)
Robert Kay (2007), RW, Clarington Toros
A bullish forward who dominates and excels down low, banging away and scoring garbage goals .. skates with a hunched-over style which generates adequate speed to complement his style of play .. strong lower body helps his balance .. keeps his feet moving, continually resulting in defencemen having to haul him down for penalties .. can make nice inside-out moves to draw defencemen out of position .. must exhibit more intensity when the puck isn't within reach.
Projection: Kay is the type of player that could step into the OHL next season. He is big and strong on the puck. He would thrive from playing with a slick playmaker that can get shots off as Kay likes to charge the net. He should be a top three round selection and could be one of those sleeper picks that everyone talks about in years to come. (5gp, 5-1-6 pim 6)
Reggie Traccitto (2007), D, Mississauga Senators
A reliable stay-at-home defender .. smart player who is cautious to not get caught out of position, but can still follow a play well offensively .. used on PP and has nice stick-handling skills on the line to buy time and create potential offensive opportunities .. needs to learn how to hit with his shoulder, since on several hits he got caught with his arms up and took poor penalties.
Projection: Traccitto will take a while to develop. He may not reach the OHL, however he is a good player who will probably thrive at a lower level. He will log many important minutes with his future club and will be counted on heavily. (3gp, 0-0-0 pim 10)
PK Subban (2007), D, Markham Islanders
Generously listed at 5'10 .. is very raw but has nice offensive instincts .. quarterbacked the powerplay, nice hard shot which is kept low .. skating is suspect and he falls down way too often .. his decision-making is also questionable .. gambles a lot and those kinds of decisions will not work at the next level .. challenges shooters and is quite physical, making players pay the price in the corners and coming over the line.
Projection: Subban is the ultimate pet project for a team. He needs to add on muscle weight and make a committed effort to improve his skating. Subban may be better suited for Jr.B where the game is not as fast and his mistakes won't result in opposition scoring chances. (4gp, 0-2-2 pim 9)
