NHL: Washington Goes Green

McKeen's recently had the chance to talk with Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green and asked him about his added responsibilities and his main goal for this season. The Calgary native has elevated his game since being selected 29th overall in 2004 and looks poised to make his mark on the backend by being more of an offensive contributor.
McKeen's: What has been the biggest change you have noticed in your game from this point last year compared to where you are now?

Green: I am playing with more confidence and focus. I was dedicated to increased fitness in the off-season as well. I came into the league last year and I didn't really know what to expect and it was a real eye opener as to how much more I needed to work on my game. I spent the bulk of the season trying to learn how to be a pro and focused my energy on becoming just that, a better pro. I came into this year more mentally prepared and understand what is expected of me.
McKeen's: Speaking of confidence, you added some bulk on your upper body how much has that helped you, especially down low?
Green: It was one thing that I needed to do for sure. I mean I am not 6-foot-8, so added strength was a must for me. I have a trainer back home (Doug Crashley) and he worked exclusively with me and did a great job.
McKeen's: You have been playing both special teams. You have been showing that confidence with the puck regularly. Is that something that coach Hanlon has encouraged you to do?
Green: I would definitely agree with that. He has been great with helping me along and providing me with opportunities to allow my game to grow. However, that being said, everything has to be within the team system and staying true to it.
McKeen's: You were sent down last year for a few weeks only to return to the AHL for the playoff drive once the Capitals were eliminated from playoff contention. What was your focus like going back to the AHL? Did you treat it as a learning experience?
Green: It was a good opportunity for me to play ample minutes. We advanced to the finals again. Although we did not win, it was a good experience for me to develop. The guys down there are great and their support is instrumental to where I am today.
McKeen's: Let's talk about those guys briefly. It must be nice to walk into a room where you join many of your fellow teammates from the Bears, as the Capitals are still rebuilding.
Green: I know everyone up here and down there so it is comforting. However, I want to be here and help this team win.
McKeen's: Finally have you set any personal goals for this season?
Green: Not much of a personal goal as much as it is a team one and I want to play in the NHL playoffs and have a chance to win the Cup.
