NHL Teams Loan Six To Canadas National Team

Six players have been loaned to Canada's National Men's Team by five NHL teams for the 2002 Deutschland Cup, National Men’s Team General Manager Steve Tambellini announced on Thursday.
Canada’s National Men’s Team for international events such as the Deutschland Cup are comprised of Canadians either currently playing in Europe or in the AHL.

Canada’s roster for the 2002 Deutschland Cup boasts six players on loan from NHL teams: Micki Dupont (Calgary), Michael Henrich (Edmonton), Steve Kariya (Vancouver), Travis Roche (Minnesota), Peter Sarno (Edmonton) and Jonathan Sim (Dallas).
“We’re very pleased with the group of players we’ve assembled for these international games and especially with the involvement of five NHL teams,” said Tambellini. “NHL General Managers have recognized Canada’s National Men’s Team as a great development opportunity for key young players in their organizations.”
In 2001-2002, Canada’s National Men’s Team had seven players (Blair Betts, CAL; Sébastien Centomo, TOR; Ryan Bonni, VAN, Christian Chartier, TOR; Patrick Desrochers, PHX, Steve Montador, CAL; Jamie Wright, CAL.on loan from NHL teams for the Spengler Cup where Canada lost the championship in overtime, and three players (Micki Dupont, CAL; Alex Henry, EDM; Chad Hinz, EDM) on loan from NHL teams for the Sweden Games.
Deutschland Cup in Hannover, Germany (November 8-10, 2002)
Canada’s entry for the Deutschland Cup, coached by Gary Green, will take part in an exhibition game in Cologne on Nov. 6th against Germany and in the Deutschland Cup from November 8-10 in Hannover, Germany. Canada will be facing National teams from Germany, Switzerland and the USA in this event. Canada won the Deutschland Cup for the first time in 2000 and finished 3rd in 2001. The team will have the six players on loan from NHL teams, several former NHL-ers, including Shawn Anderson, Bohonos and Alex Hicks and former Olympians Todd Hlushko and Brad Schlegel.
Exhibition game against Switzerland in Bern, Switzerland (November 5, 2002)
A second team, also coached by Green, will also play an exhibition game against the Swiss National Team on November 5, 2002 in Bern, Switzerland.
Canada’s roster for this game will have several former NHL-ers, including Lonny Bohonos, Sébastien Bordeleau, Mike Craig, Christian Dubé, Jamie Heward, Christian Matte and Jarrold Skalde and former Olympians Mark Astley, Chris Lindberg and Jean-Yves Roy.
The CHA and the Men's Team coaching staff are taking part in these competitions with two different rosters as an opportunity to develop and evaluate players for future events in Europe.
