NHL: Jonathan Toews Interview

Jonathan Toews will no doubt be the captain of the Blackhawks. The only question is when. Toews has put up staggering totals this season, despite two separate injuries that have kept him from the lineup. He scored on his first shot in his first game and followed that up with points in ten consecutive games to start the year. Toews already has a decorated International career, as he has captured two WJC gold medals and most recently won gold as a member of the Canada's World Championship team, where he was the youngest member on the team. McKeen's had a chance to talk with Toews and ask about his season to date.
McKeen's: How does it feel to be the centre piece of the resurging Blackhawks organization?

Toews: It felt good a while ago but it has been frustrating of late, as I have been battling through some injuries. I am trying to get better and hopefully I can be able to produce like I know I am capable of.
McKeen's: You have always played with older players and not only play but lead your respective teams. What has the transition been like this year?
Toews: I think it was easier that I originally anticipated. Everyone from the coaching staff to the players have made it that much smoother of a transition. We are a young team so we all encourage one another and the environment is very positive.
McKeen's: You have missed games with various injuries and have not missed a beat offensively. However, are you surprised how well you have played away from the puck?
Toews: Yes, I have been happy with that aspect of my game. It is tough nonetheless because some nights you are going to play against some really talented opponents. There are so many things you need to be aware of out there. With the season coming to an end, it becomes even more important when a goal can decide a game like it did here tonight in Detroit, which are points we can not afford to lose. These are learning experiences though and you only really get better playing against stronger competition.
McKeen's: This is young up and coming team. You have seen other organizations turn their season around and become playoff contenders quickly. Is this something you envision with the Hawks?
Toews: This is a solid team that just might be lacking experience. On the flipside, we have shown remarkable composure due to some of our key players being out with injuries that have kept them out of the lineup for long periods of time. We have battled through and shown our character, as I firmly believe we compete all the time and make teams work for two points if they do manage to get them.
McKeen's: Are you surprised at some of the 1988-born players that are not only playing but making an impact this season?
Toews: Yeah. I knew it was a strong class but the fact that so many of us are playing in the NHL is really a sign of how well some of these guys have played. Players such as James Sheppard is having a good season with Minnesota so it is encouraging to see guys you played up with making their mark in the NHL.
McKeen's: This team has seen a lot of turn over due to the rash of injuries and as a result many players form your AHL affiliate have been called up. Which guys have impressed you the most in terms of skill?
Toews: The impact and more importantly their ability to step in and learn the systems and produce to help us win hockey games is a huge credit to their play and the overall direction of the organization. It is encouraging to see so many of these guys contribute. I remember what I was like when I played my first few games; all jittery and nervous but as mentioned these guys have done a remarkable job and it bodes well for us for years to come.
