NE Prep: BBN and Governors Academy
BB&N and Governor's Academy may not be in this year's playoff hunt, but present solid young players that will help them in the future. New York Islanders draft pick
Brian Day had a strong game and helped lead his team to a 2-1 (OT) win, spoiling a tremendous performance by BB&N's junior goaltender Chris Venti.
Brian Day (NYI), F, Governor's Acad. (SR)
Committed to Colgate for 2007 .. his play picked up steam late in the third period after an uneventful game most of the night .... takes face-offs only along the right wall in the offensive zone but seemed to have won them all .. his game comes in spurts and is like an on/off switch – loving it one minute while questioning the next .. needs to stop making the impossible cross-ice pass through two defenders .. needs to generate more scoring chances as his sniper-ability needs testing before reaching higher levels .. could definitely be an energy-type player with good skills but must improve consistency .. has a quick release on his shot .. had a 2-on-1 with 22 seconds left and passed it off to Herbie Kent who could not put it away .. had a nice assist drawing two defenders with his speed on the puck before passing to linemate Steven Cody.
Steven Cody (2007), F, Governor's Acad. (SR)
Team captain has good size and plays on a line with Herbie Kent and Brian Day .. played an all-out physical game .. very reliable defensively and blocked a few shots while shorthanded .. scored a goal, but does not have a great scoring touch around the net .. a player that every team would love to have..
Herbie Kent (2007), F, Governor's Acad. (JR)
Has tremendous talent but lacks consistency .. has quick hands, but needs to bear down in tight .. has a good shot and good playmaking abilities .. looks more like a playmaker than a goal scorer .. plays in all situations, but must improve his consistency
Cody Ferriero (2009), F, Governor's Acad. (FR)
Freshman plays on the second line and has a tremendous amount of potential .. plays on the second power play unit and battles hard along the boards .. must work on his release to get his shot off faster, but overall is definitely a player to remember.
Chris Menard (2008), F, Governor's Acad. (SO)
Has a decent set of skills with a reliable sense of the defensive game .. scored the overtime winner with a snapshot from the slot .. is still developing and could become a strong player with time.
Trevor Hines (2008), F, Governor's Acad. (SO)
His speed and pursuit of the puck instantly get your attention .. despite size (5-9, 170) he drives hard to the net every chance he gets .. puck-protection skills need improving .. has a tendency to over handle the puck in the offensive zone.
Billy Fitzgerald (2009), D, BB&N (FR)
A late 1990 DOB with good size (6-0, 175) .. has a commanding presence in the corners and played a solid game defensively .... quick first few steps, but had a tough time handling the speed of the smaller Governor players .. took a bad penalty when team was already down a man .. did not see much offensive potential, but his team overall did not have many scoring chances.
Blake Barker (2009), D, BB&N (FR)
Provides a solid foundation on the blueline with Fitzgerald .. only a freshman, Barker has good size (6-3, 185) .. is an awkward skater, but similar to Fitzgerald, has a tremendous presence in the defensive zone .. loves the physical play in the corners and looks for big hits at the blueline .. protects the front of the net well and uses good body position to tie up the man .. needs to work on his hands as outlet passes were a bit off .. question his offensive ability, but has time to develop.
Chris Venti (2007), G, BB&N (JR)
Was the sole reason why BB&N had any business going into overtime .. a butterfly goalie with quick feet and a good glove .. has a tendency to go down early but does not leave too many rebounds .... repeatedly tested up high as he drops down on almost every shot, but can compensate with a quick glove and blocker .. according to the USHR, he ranks among the top ten goalies in almost every category and displayed it here with a tremendous game
Players to Watch: Dan Mazzei (2009), F, BB&N (FR), Stephen Wadsworth (2008), F, BB&N (SO)
