Future Watch: Cody Hodgson Step Ahead

While the Minor Midgets were taking the spotlight at the 20th Annual Tim Horton's AAA Invitational Tournament in Hamilton, one of their peers was tearing up the older age group.
Cody Hodgson, a 1990-born pivot dominated the Major Midget section ('88-89's), leading the defending champion Markham Waxers Midget AAA team to a 2-1 win over the London Jr. Knights over Thanksgiving Weekend.

Hodgson led all scorers at the event with 12 points in 6 games and was named Tournament MVP.
A standout last season with the Junior Canadiens minor midget program of the GTHL, he made a successful step up this season and is one of a few 1990-born players at the midget level.
Scouting
Already an assistant captain, Hodgson possesses quick hands and quick feet and is always moving. He eagerly wants the puck in all situations but also plays a strong two-way game as he supports his defensemen well.
The Waxers attack is designed around Hodgson's abilities as his superb first step and acceleration are often relied upon to lead the rush on plays which start from behind the net. Hodgson is able to stickhandle at top speed and routinely beats two or three opponents to gain the offensive zone. And he's good in the faceoff circle, winning a majority of his draws.
The Markham resident certainly has not looked out of place playing on the top line, logging considerable powerplay time and demonstrating that he know how to finish.
Awards, Points Flow
The awards are mounting for the young star who was also the top scorer and MVP at the OMHA Championships earlier this year as well as the leading scorer at both the Sudbury Big Nickel Tourney, averaging over three points per game, and at the Silver Stick finals in Sarnia.
He delivered a commanding five-point performance last week in a 6-0 trouncing over the rival Richmond Hill Stars.
His talent level and ability to dominate against guys two to three years older and 20 to 30 pounds heavier has been well-documented by OHL talent scouts and should translate into a top-five spot for the upcoming Priority Selection draft.
