Ryan Caldwell, NYI, D, (Rating: 2.5), Bridgeport (AHL) - Playing on two wonky knees, valiant Denver captain inspired the Pioneers to a national title, highlighted by a shot-blocking clinic during a furious final two minutes in the championship game, crowning a career-best season that saw him triple his junior goal totals en route to being named WCHA Defensive Player of the Year .. A mean and mobile powerhouse with excellent puck skills and a fearsome slapshot, Caldwell matured a great deal last season, showing better decision making and cutting down on the spiteful retaliatory fouls that have become a trademark .. Underwent operations on both knees during the summer.
Joe Callahan, Phx, D, (Rating: 2.5), Utah (AHL) - Aggressive third-rounder turned pro following a breakout junior year with the Yale Bulldogs that saw him finish sixth in scoring among ECAC defensemen .. A tough, hard-working defender with good mobility and skills, Callahan is adept at breaking up plays due to his quick stick, and likes to punish opponents along the walls, however, he isn’t as mean or as effective in front of the net as he has a difficult time sensing danger at times .. Must learn to protect the crease area better, but has all the physical tools to develop into a No. 5 or 6 NHL rearguard.
Gregory Campbell, Fla, LW, (Rating: 2.5), San Antonio (AHL) - Kitchener's Memorial Cup star missed most of camp to a knee injury after reporting in tip-top shape last fall, but was rewarded with an his NHL debut in October before spending the balance of his pro rookie campaign in San Antonio, where he steadily progressed .. A tough, all-weather forward with exceptional smarts and work habits, Campbell takes no prisoners along the boards and is a strong, powerful skater who drives fearlessly to the net .. Character leader could advance with a strong camp.
Jeff Carter, Phi, C, (Rating: 4.0), Sault Ste. Marie (OHL) - London-born thoroughbred led the Greyhounds with a career-high 36 goals, while also playing vital roles in Canada's silver-medal win at the World Juniors, where he was named to the media all-star team (6-5-2-7, plus-5), and during a sparkling AHL playoff debut (12-4-1-5) .. A well-constructed mix of size, speed and smarts, Carter generates scoring chances down low due to his quick hands and giant wingspan, and, though not overly physical, plays a tough and determined game that accentuates his world-class skating and speed (tied for second in the OHL with six shorthanded goals) .. Ready for NHL training.
Kyle Chipchura, Mtl, C, (Rating: 3.0), Prince Albert (WHL) - Green first rounder played a strong, though unspectacular, two-way role for much of the season, but finished the season with a solid playoff showing (6-2-4-6-12), despite suffering through a bad groin for much of the year and earned mixed reviews in an inconsistent performance at the U18 World Juniors (7-3-2-5-28) .. A strong skater, Chipchura is a vigorous, creative player with long-range puck skills and is effective in traffic due to a strong lower body, but often fails to exhibit the requisite focus and a keen scorer's eye to dominate on the scoreboard .. Must develop better drive and evolve as a leader.
Kris Chucko, Cgy, LW, (Rating: 3.0), Minnesota (WCHA) - Inspirational Silverbacks captain finished the season on fire with 20 points in his final seven games to spearhead Salmon Arm to a league title, as well as lock down a first-round draft berth .. A tenacious and physical two-way forward, Chucko brings a nasty edge every shift and, though not blessed with elite speed or skill, is a strong, mobile skater with underrated puckhandling abilities and an affinity for outworking his opponents .. Still must add muscle and discipline to fulfill his considerable upside as a mid-line NHL power forward.
Noah Clarke, LA, LW, (Rating: NR), Manchester (AHL) - Fresh off a breakout senior finale at Colorado College, jet-fuelled California native soared in his pro debut to finish third among AHL rookie scorers, while also becoming the first homegrown product to play for the Kings thanks to a two-game audition in December .. A flashy, highly-skilled winger with a blistering shot, Clarke whirls around the ice, exploiting his great speed and ability to execute in top gear (won the 'fastest skater' competition at the AHL All-Star Game) .. Must learn to bring his 'A' game every night to offset lack of size and physical bite.
Braydon Coburn, Atl, D, (Rating: 4.0), Portland (WHL) - 'Measured progress' would best describe the third WHL term of hulking Portland captain, who showed more confident puckcarrying and physical play, but also struggled with his decision making at times, all of which was tempered by a lukewarm playoff showing .. Aside from an innate feel for the game, Coburn also possesses great range due to his tremendous size/reach combined with excellent mobility and speed, however, he lacks a natural mean streak and must continue to add more strength and aggression to compensate .. Lots of learning ahead.
Carlo Colaiacovo, Tor, D, (Rating: 3.5), St. John's (AHL) - Recovered from off-season shoulder surgery, coveted first-rounder continued to battle injuries (broken nose, wrist sprain) in addition to rampant trade rumours, but persevered to finish sixth in scoring among AHL rookie defensemen .. The skilled, hard-shooting Colaiacovo is a lethal blueline threat due to his world-class acceleration and zest for joining the attack, but, despite flaunting a similar enthusiasm for physical play, still lacks the strength to stay on his feet, and must focus on developing a safer, more selective game .. Patience should reap big dividends if his body gets durable enough to survive NHL warfare.
Jeremy Colliton, NYI, C, (Rating: 3.0), Prince Albert (WHL) - Methodical Prince Albert captain solidified his status as one of the WHL's elite two-way players, spearheading the Raiders turnaround season, highlighted by a club-high 10 points in the playoffs (6-5-5-10), while also playing a key shutdown role on Canada's WJC silver-medalists .. A tough, poised leader, Colliton rules the boards and routinely shuts down the opposition's top line thanks to terrific puck-protection skills and positional awareness, but is also a mature finisher with a powerful shot and great composure in all situations .. Will be an NHLer if his quickness and skating mechanics continue to develop.
